28th – 29th March 2023, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain | The General Council for Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions (CIBAFI) is organising a 2-day online Technical Workshop on "Legal Aspects in Islamic Finance" in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain. To ensure compliance with Shariah principles and mitigate legal risks, it is essential to understand the legal aspects of Islamic finance as it evolves rapidly on the global scene.
CIBAFI is staging this workshop to comprehensively review Islamic finance principles, governance, standards and regulations from a legal perspective. It features presentations, case studies and interactive discussions on topics such as the industry's development, basis and areas of Islamic finance, legal framework and challenges, licensing of Islamic banks, Sharia supervisory boards, arbitration and dispute resolution, and standard laws and regulations. Its participants are senior representatives of Islamic banks and financial institutions as well as Regulatory and Supervisory Authorities (RSAs), who “will be able to apply their knowledge to analyse and address legal challenges in the industry, ultimately contributing to its growth and development.”
Ms. Zainab Al Owainaty, Director of Administration and Finance, emphasised the importance of CIBAFI's role in advancing the growth and development of the industry through initiatives focused on knowledge-sharing and capacity building. These initiatives are designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of CIBAFI's members and stakeholders, contributing value to the industry.
The workshop is facilitated by Dr. AbdelGadir Warsama Ghalib, Founder & Principal Legal Counsel, Abdelgadir Warsama Legal Consultancy, Bahrain. In addition, industry experts and leaders in attendance to share their practical knowledge and expertise as guest speakers include: Dr. Umar Oseni, Chief Executive Officer, International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM), Malaysia; Dr. Rami Sulaiman Abudaqqa, Secretary General, International Islamic Centre for Reconciliation and Arbitration (IICRA), United Arab Emirates; Mr. Mohamed Ali Ghanem, Senior Manager - Legislation, Regulation & Policy, Central Bank of the U.A.E.; and Mr. M. Delwar Hossain, Partner, Baker & McKenzie Limited, Bahrain.
Consistent with the CIBAFI strategic objective on Professional Development, the Technical Workshop is designed to enhance capacity building in the Islamic financial services industry, targeting staff, regulators, and practitioners. Furthermore, it aims to engage participants in discussing the industry's current environment.
